The Dreamers are the Saviors of the World

There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into sun.

The dreamers are the saviors of the world. As the visible world is sustained by the invisible, so men, through all their trials and sins and sordid vocations, are nourished by the beautiful visions of their solitary dreamers. Humanity cannot forget its dreamers; it cannot let their ideals fade and die; it lives in them; it knows them as the realities which it shall one day see and know.

Los soñadores son los salvadores del mundo. Así como el mundo visible se sostiene por fuerzas invisibles, así el hombre, entre todos sus juicios, pecados y vocaciones sórdidas, se nutre de las visiones de belleza de sus soñadores solitarios.

La humanidad no puede olvidar a sus soñadores, no puede dejar sus ideales desaparecer y morir; la humanidad vive en estos, los conoce como las realidades que un día serán vistas y conocidas.

Composer, sculptor, painter, poet, prophet, sage, these are the makers of the after-world, the architects of heaven. The world is beautiful because they have lived; without them, laboring humanity would perish. 

Los compositores, escultores, pintores, poetas, profetas, visionarios, ellos son los hacedores del mundo, los arquitectos del cielo. El mundo es bello porque ellos vivieron, sin ellos la laboriosa humanidad perecería.

He who cherishes a beautiful vision, a lofty ideal in his heart, will one day realize it. Columbus cherished a vision of another world, and he discovered it; Copernicus fostered the vision of a multiplicity of worlds and a wider universe, and he revealed it; Buddha beheld the vision of a spiritual world of stainless beauty and perfect peace, and he entered into it. 

Aquel que lleva en el corazón una visión maravillosa, o un noble ideal, algún día lo realizará. Colón llevó en su corazón la visión de otro mundo, y lo descubrió; Copérnico impulsó la visión de muchos mundos y un universo más extenso, y lo descubrió; Buda contempló una visión de un mundo espiritual de santidad y paz perfecta, y entró en él.

Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals; herish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you but remain true to them, your world will at last be built. 

Valora tus visiones; valora tus ideales; valora la música que agita tu corazón, la belleza que se forma en tu mente, la gracia que viste tus más puros pensamientos, de ellos crecerán condiciones encantadoras, un ambiente celestial; de ellas se construirá, si te mantienes fiel, tu mundo.

To desire is to obtain; to aspire is to achieve. Shall man's basest desires receive the fullest measure of gratification, and his purest aspirations starve for lack of sustenance? Such is not the Law: such a condition of things can never obtain : "Ask and receive." 

Querer es poder; soñar es lograr. ¿Deberán los bajos deseos del hombre recibir la máxima gratificación, y sus aspiraciones más puras morir sin sustento? Esa no es la ley: Tal condición nunca ocurrirá: “Pide y recibirás”.

Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your Vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil. 

Sueña nobles sueños, y mientras sueñes te convertirás. Tu visión es la promesa de lo que un día serás. Tu ideal es la profecía de lo que un día llegarás a revelar.

The greatest achievement was at first and for a time a dream. The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities. 

Los logros más grandes fueron al inicio y por un tiempo un sueño. El roble duerme en la bellota; el ave espera en el huevo; y en la más elevada visión del alma un ángel de la guarda se agita. Los sueños son las semillas de la realidad.

You circumstances may be uncongenial, but they shall not long remain so if you but perceive an Ideal and strive to reach it. You cannot travelwithin and stand still without. Here is a youth hard pressed by poverty and labor; confined long hours in an unhealthy workshop; unschooled, and lacking all the arts of refinement. 

Tus circunstancias pueden no ser de tu agrado, pero no han de seguir siendo las mismas si concibes un ideal y luchas por alcanzarlo. Tú no puedes movilizarte por dentro y permanecer estático por fuera.

Este es un joven oprimido por la pobreza y el trabajo; confinado largas horas en un taller insalubre; sin escuela, y sin el arte del refinamiento.

But he dreams of better things; he thinks of intelligence, of refinement, of grace and beauty. He conceives of, mentally builds up, an ideal condition of life; the vision of a wider liberty and a larger scope takes possession of him; unrest urges him to action, and he utilizes all his spare time and means, small though they are, to the development of his latent powers and resources.

 Pero sueña con cosas mejores; piensa en la inteligencia y el refinamiento, en gracia y belleza.

Concibe, y crea con su mente, una vida ideal; la visión de una libertad más amplia y miras más elevadas toma posesión de él; la ansiedad lo lleva a la acción, y utiliza todo su tiempo libre y sus medios, aunque sean pequeños, al desarrollo de sus poderes y talentos ocultos.

Very soon so altered has his mind become that the workshop can no longer hold him. It has become so out of harmony with his mentality that it falls out of his life as a garment is cast aside, and, with the growth of opportunities which fit the scope of his expanding powers, he passes out of it forever. 

Muy pronto su mente ha sido tan alterada que el taller no puede retenerlo más. Se ha convertido en algo tan fuera de armonía con sus pensamientos que queda fuera de su vida como una ropa que es tirada, y, al crecer las oportunidades que encajan con las miras de su creciente poder, se desvanece para siempre.

Years later we see this youth as a full-grown man. We find him a master of certain forces of the mind which he wields with world-wide influence and almost unequaled power. In his hands he holds the cords of gigantic responsibilities; he speaks, and lo! lives are changed; men and women hang upon his words and remold their characters, and, sunlike, he becomes the fixed and luminous center around which innumerable destinies revolve. 

Años más tarde, vemos a este joven como todo un hombre. Lo encontramos dueño de ciertas fuerzas mentales que esgrime con influencia universal y poder casi inigualado. En sus manos toma los hilos de responsabilidades gigantescas; él habla, y mira! las vidas cambian, hombres y mujeres toman sus palabras y las siguen para modificar su carácter, y, como la luz del sol, se convierte en el centro y eje luminoso alrededor del que innumerables destinos se giran.

He has realized the Vision of his youth. He has become one with his Ideal. 

Ha realizado la Visión de su juventud. Se ha convertido en uno con su ideal.

And you, too, youthful reader, will realize the Vision (not the idle wish) of your heart, be it base or beautiful, or a mixture of both, for you will always gravitate toward that which you secretly most love. Into your hands will be placed the exact results of your own thoughts; you will receive that which you earn; no more, no less. Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts, your Vision, your Ideal. 

Y tú también, joven lector, lograrás la visión (no el deseo ocioso) de tu corazón, sea éste bajo o hermoso, o una mezcla de ambos, porque tu destino siempre te lleva hacia aquello que secretamente más amas. En tus manos será entregado el resultado exacto de tus pensamientos; recibirás lo que te ganes; no más, no menos. Cualquiera sea tu entorno actual, caer, soportar, o te elevarás con tus pensamientos, tu Visión, tu Ideal.

You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration: in the beautiful words of Stanton Kirkham Davis, "You may be keeping accounts, and presently you shall walk out of the door that for so long has seemed to you the barrier of your ideals, and shall find yourself before an audience - the pen still behind your ear, the ink stains on your fingers - and then and there shall pour out the torrent of your inspiration. 

Llegarás a ser tan pequeño como los deseos que te controlan, tan grande como tus aspiraciones dominantes: en las hermosas palabras de Kirkham Davis, “Puedes ser contador, y en breve has de salir por la puerta que por tanto tiempo ha parecido la barrera para tus ideales, y te encontrarás ante una audiencia – el lápiz aún sobre tu oreja, la tinta aún en tus dedos – y allí y entonces derramar el torrente de tu inspiración.

You may be driving sheep, and you shall wander to the city - bucolic and open  mouthed; shall wander under the intrepid guidance of the spirit into the studio of the master, and after a time he shall say, 'I have nothing more to teach you.' And now you have become the master, who did so recently dream of great things while driving sheep. 

 Puedes estar pastando ovejas, y vagarás en la ciudad –bucólico y con la boca abierta; entrarás bajo la intrépida guía del espíritu en el estudio del maestro, y después de un tiempo él te dirá, ‘no tengo nada más que enseñarte.’ Y ahora te has convertido en el maestro, quien hace poco soñaba grandezas mientras pastaba ovejas. 

You shall lay down the saw and the plane to take upon yourself the regeneration of the world.

"Dejarás la sierra y el cepillo para tomar en tus manos la regeneración del mundo”.

The thoughtless, the ignorant, and the indolent, seeing only the apparent effects of things and not the things themselves, talk of luck, of fortune, and chance. Seeing a man grow rich, they say, "How lucky he is!" Observing another become intellectual, they exclaim.

El descuidado, el ignorante, y el indolente, viendo sólo el efecto aparente de las cosas y no las cosas en sí, habla de suerte, fortuna, y azar. Al ver a un hombre hacerse rico dirán, “¡cuánta suerte tiene!” Al observar a otro hacerse intelectual, exclamarán.

"How highly favored he is!" And noting the saintly character and wide influence of another, the remark, "How chance aids him at every turn!" 

“¡Que favorecido es!” Y al notar el carácter santo y la gran influencia de otro comentarán, “¡Cómo lo ayuda el azar a cada momento!” 

They do not see the trials and failures and struggles which these men have voluntarily encountered in order to gain their experience; have no knowledge of the sacrifices they have made, of the undaunted efforts they have put forth, of the faith they have exercised, that they might overcome the apparently insurmountable, and realize the Vision of their heart.

Ellos no ven los intentos, fracasos y la lucha que estos hombres han enfrentado voluntariamente para ganar experiencia; no conocen del sacrificio que han hecho, de los esfuerzos intrépidos que se han propuesto, de la fe que han ejercido para lograr lo aparentemente imposible, y realizar la Visión de su corazón.

They do not know the darkness and the heartaches; they only see the light and joy, and call it "luck"; do not see the long and arduous journey, but only behold the pleasant goal, and call it "good fortune"; do not understand the process, but only perceive the result, and call it "chance." 

 Ellos no saben de la oscuridad y la angustia; sólo ven la luz y la dicha, y la llaman “suerte”; no ven las largas y arduas jornadas, sino sólo contemplan el logro placentero, y lo llaman “buena fortuna”; no entienden el proceso, sino sólo perciben el resultado, y lo llaman “azar”.

In all human affairs there are efforts, and there are results, and the strength of the effort is the measure of the result. Chance is not. "Gifts," powers, material, intellectual, and spiritual possessions are the fruits of effort; they are thoughts completed, objects accomplished, visions realized.

En todos los asuntos humanos hay esfuerzos, y hay resultados, y la fortaleza del esfuerzo es la medida del resultado. No la suerte. “Regalos”, poder, posesiones materiales, intelectuales y espirituales son el fruto del esfuerzo; son pensamientos consumados, objetivos alcanzados, visiones realizadas.

The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart - this you will build your life by, this you will become.

La visión que glorifiques en tu mente, el ideal que ganó el trono de tu corazón – Con esto construirás tu vida, en eso te convertirás.
